In Actor Network Theory objects, ideas, processes, and any other relevant factors are seen as (potentially) just as important in creating social situations as humans. The term actant is then used as a more neutral collective term for all these actors.

These are some distinct types of actants:

• Social actors at the four socio-technical levels: pico (a human in various roles), micro (organizations), meso (sector organizations) and macro (institutions that are landscape-wide).
